    POLICE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) DETAINED 450 STUDENTS FROM A COLUMN OF 1,600, WHO MARCHED THROUGH TOKYO IN PROTEST AT THE CONTINUED UNITED STATES CONTROL OF OKINAWA. MOST OF THE ARRESTS WERE MADE OUTSIDE THE RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. EISAKU SATO.

    THE STUDENTS WERE CALLING FOR AN EARLY RETURN TO JAPANESE RULE OF THE PACIFIC ISLAND OF OKINAWA, CAPTURED BY THE UNITED STATES IN WORLD WAR TWO AND NOW USED AS A BIG U.S. MILITARY BASE.

    THE STUDENTS CLASHED WITH RIOT POLICE WHILE PROTESTING OUTSIDE THE PRIME MINISTER'S RESIDENCE THAT MR. SATO HAD SECRET INTENTIONS OF TAKING OVER AMERICAN NUCLEAR INSTALLATIONS WHEN THE ISLAND IS EVENTUALLY RETURNED.

    SOME 5,000 RIOT POLICE WERE ON DUTY DURING THE DEMONSTRATION TO KEEP THE STUDENTS IN CHECK.
