  • Description

THERE WERE NO SURPRISES FOR THE EXPERTS AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (TUESDAY) ON THE SECOND DAY OF LONDON'S INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. BRAZILIAN STAR MARIA BUENO, THREE TIMES A FORMER CHAMPION AND RUNNER-UP DURING THE LAST TWO YEARS, TOOK 44 MINUTES TO BEAT HER FIRST OPPONENT, LAURA ROSSOUW OF SOUTH AFRICA.

MISS BUENO BROUGHT FLASHES OF THE ARTISTIC BRILLIANCE WHICH CARRIED HER TO VICTORY IN 1959, 1960, AND 1964 TO TODAY'S MATCH, AND TOOK ONLY TWO SETS TO DEFEAT MISS ROSSOUW, SHE, FOR HER PART, FOUGHT VALIANTLY THROUGHOUT THE GAMES, BUT SHE SEEMED UNABLE TO COUNTER MISS BUENO'S STRENGTH OF STROKE.

HOWEVER, MISS BUENO'S SUCCESS WASN'T WITHOUT ITS FLAWS - DURING THE COURSE OF THE MATCH SHE GAVE FIVE DOUBLE FAULTS.

IT WAS A TRIBUTE TO MISS BUENO'S POWER THAT THE MATCH ONLY RAN INTO TWO SETS, LEAVING THE FINAL SCORES AT 6-3, 6-1.

TODAY WAS TRADITIONALLY 'LADIES DAY' AT WIMBLEDON, WITH INTEREST IN THE ON-AND-OFF-COURT FASHIONS RIVALLING THE TENNIS ITSELF AS A MAJOR ATTRACTION. HOWEVER, OWING TO THE BACKLOG OF 22 MATCHES CAUSED BY FOUR OF WIMBLEDON'S 16 COURTS BEING OUT OF ACTION YESTERDAY FOLLOWING UPON SUNDAY'S TORRENTIAL RAIN, THE WOMEN WERE OBLIGED TO SHARE A LITTLE OF THEIR GLORY WITH THE MEN.
