    A Negro integration leader was shot and killed in the southern state of Mississippi today (12 June).

    The victim, was Medgar Evers, field secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.He was shot in the pre-dawn hours of the morning.A sniper had ambushed him outside his home at Jackson, Mississippi and fired a shotgun bullet into Evers back.

    The bullet went through Evers body and into his home.The wounded man was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died an hour after the attack despite frantic efforts of doctors to save him.

    Evers had been a leader in the fight against racial discrimination in Mississippi, and had been in the forefront of the recent wave of Negro demonstrations in Jackson, the state capital.

    The Jackson demonstrations have abated, but hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested for staging sit-in protests in segregated restaurants and hotels.One such sit-in resulted in the brutal beating of several Negro and white demonstrators by anti-segregationists.

    Police in Jackson have begun a search for the assassin.Chief of Detectives M.B.Pierce says the FBI has been asked to assist in the investigation.And the NAACP has announced a 10 thousand dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer.Mayor Allen Thompson or Jackson interrupted a vacation in Florida to return to the Mississippi capital.He ordered the city's police to put all their resources into the investigation.
