  • Description

IN CHICAGO TODAY (MONDAY) PRESIDENT JOHNSON REPEATED HIS REMARKS OF LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY) ABOUT THE DIVISIONS SEPARATING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. WITHOUT REFERRING TO HIS DECISION NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION HE SAID THAT THERE WERE DEEP AND EMOTIONAL ISSUES DIVIDING AMERICANS, INCLUDING VIETNAM.

THE PRESIDENT SAID AMERICANS HAD A FACULTY FOR SOMETIMES EMPHASISING THOSE THINGS ON WHICH THEY WERE DIVIDED RATHER THAN THOSE THINGS ON WHICH THE COUNTRY WAS UNITED.

SENATOR ROBERT KENNEDY, WHO HAS EMERGED AS A STRONGER CONTENDER FOR THE PRESIDENCY FOLLOWING PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S DECISION NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION, DESCRIBED THE PRESIDENT'S DECISION AS MAGNANIMOUS AND COURAGEOUS. HE IS SEEKING DISCUSSIONS WITH PRESIDENT JOHNSON ON HOW THEY MIGHT WORK TOGETHER IN THE INTERESTS OF NATIONAL UNITY. SENATOR KENNEDY SAID DESPITE EXTREMIST ACTIONS THERE REMAINED IN AMERICA A RESERVOIR OF HOPE AND GOODWILL.

SENATOR EUGENE McCARTHY, WHOSE POSITION FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT NOMINATION HAS ALSO BEEN ENHANCED BY THE PRESIDENT'S DECISION NOT TO SEEK A FURTHER TERM REFUSED TO MAKE ANY COMMENT ON THE DECISION EXCEPT THAT IT WAS A SURPRISE AND CHANGED AMERICA'S POLITICAL PICTURE FOR THE COMING YEAR.
