  • Description

TWO WEEKS OF CELEBRATIONS COMMEMORATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RAISING OF THE BRITISH FLAG IN SALISBURY - NOW CAPITAL OF RHODESIA - REACHED THEIR PEAK YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) WITH A PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE CITY. AS WELL AS UNITS OF THE MILITARY FORCES, THE PARADE INCLUDED INTERNATIONAL AND COMMERCIAL FLOATS, MARCHING GIRLS, OX WAGGONS, AND PEOPLE IN PERIOD COSTUME.

THE MILITARY ASPECT OF THE PARADE INCLUDED SOLDIERS IN JEEPS AND ARMOURED CARS AS WELL AS MARCHING, AND A FLY-PAST OF HELICOPTERS AND CANBERRAS OF THE AIR FORCE. ABOUT 100 MARCHING GIRLS TOOK PART, ALONG WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF NUMEROUS OTHER YOUTH ORGANISATIONS.

ALSO IN THE PARADE WERE MARCHERS FROM THE SALVATION ARMY, THE RED CROSS, THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE, THE FIRE BRIGADE AND SPORTING ORGANISATIONS. VINTAGE CARS JOINED MODERN VEHICLES AND SPORTS CARS IN THE PARADE, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY THE GOVERNOR, SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS. THE PIONEER OX-WAGGONS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY TROOPERS, RIDERS AND OTHERS IN THE DRESS OF THE 1890'S.

EARLIER LAST WEEK, MR. IAN SMITH, THE PRIME MINISTER, TOLD THE ANNUAL CONGRESS OF HIS RULING RHODESIAN FRONT THAT THE BRITISH FLAG IN SALISBURY MAY SOON HAVE TO BE HAULED DOWN. HE SAID THAT INDEPENDENCE FOR RHODESIA, WHETHER NEGOTIATED OR NOT, WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO BE OUTSIDE THE COMMONWEALTH. IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT, HE SAID, FOR BRITAIN TO NEGOTIATE ANYTHING WITH RHODESIA THAT WOULD BE ACCEPTED BY THE AFRO-ASIAN BLOC.

IN 1890, CECIL RHODES, AS PREMIER OF CAPE COLONY, SENT A PIONEER COLUMN TO WHAT WAS TO BECOME THE COLONY OF RHODESIA. THE PIONEER COLUMN PROVIDED THE COUNTRY'S FIRST WHITE SETTLERS FRO WHOM MANY RHODESIANS ARE DESCENDED.)
