    SEVEN CREW MEMBERS WERE KILLED WHEN AN AMERICAN FREIGHTER, THE "BATON ROUGE VICTORY", STRUCK A VIET CONG MINE IN THE SAIGON RIVER LAST TUESDAY (23 AUGUST).

    THE FREIGHTER WAS GOING UPSTREAM FROM THE SOUTH CHINA SEA WHEN SHE STRUCK A MINE ABOUT 22-MILES (35-KILOMETRES) SOUTH EAST OF SAIGON AS SHE WAS PASSING THROUGH A SWAMPY MANGROVE AREA LARGELY CONTROLLED BY THE VIET CONG. THE EXPLOSION TORE A JAGGED HOLE IN THE SHIP'S SIDE, BUT THE CAPTAIN MANAGED TO MANOEUVRE THE FREIGHTER OUT OF THE DEEP WATER CHANNEL TO THE SOUTH BANK, WHERE SHE GROUNDED, SUBMERGED UP TO THE MAIN DECK.

    RIVER PATROL BOATS AND ARMED HELICOPTERS PROVIDED COVER FOR THE SHIP AS A SALVAGE VESSEL AND FOUR TUGBOATS MOVED IN TO HELP.

    THE "BATON ROUGE VICTORY" WAS CARRYING A CREW OF 45 WITH GENERAL CARGO ABOARD FOR THE UNITED STATES NAVY. ALL THE SEVEN KILLED WERE AMERICANS.
