  • Description

A STATE OF EMERGENCY WAS PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT MALAYSIA AFTER THE MALAYSIAN CABINET MET FOR 36 HOURS IN KUALA LUMPUR OF SEPTEMBER AND REVIEWED THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE LABIS AND PONTIAN AREAS, SOUTHERN MALAYA, WHERE TRAINED INDONESIAN INSURGENTS AND SABOTEURS HAD PENETRATED RECENTLY.

AS A RESULT OF THE EMERGENCY, ALL VITAL INSTALLATIONS IN MALAYSIA HAVE BEEN DECLARED PROTECTED AREAS AND UNAUTHORISED PERSONS FOUND ACTING SUSPICIOUSLY NEAR THE INSTALLATIONS ARE LIABLE TO BE SHOT AT BY ARMED TROOPS.

IN SINGAPORE, A MINESWEEPER KEEPS WATCH AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE HARBOUR. ARMED POLICE AND SOLDIERS ARE GUARDING AN ELECTRIC POWER STATION, THE TELEPHONE HOUSE, ANTENNAS AND OTHER IMPORTANT INSTALLATIONS.

BUT IN JOHORE, SOUTHERN MALAYA, ARMED TROOPS ARE INFORMING THE PEOPLE DWELLING IN RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS OF THE EMERGENCY PROCLAMATION AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE FOUND CONSPIRING AND CONCEALING INDONESIAN INFILTRATORS AND AGENTS.

THE PURPOSE OF THE NEW DECLARATION IS TO BRING TO SPEEDY TRIAL THOSE CHARGED WITH ACTS AGAINST THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT AND INVOKE THE DEATH PENALTY FOR THESE OFFENCES. UNLIKE THE FORMER 12-YEAR MALAYAN EMERGENCY WHICH ENDED IN 1960, THERE IS NO RESTRICTIONS ON MOVEMENTS OF PEOPLE OR FOOD.

THE MALAYSIAN CABINET HAD ALSO DECIDED TO REQUEST THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION ON THE LABIS AIRDROP BY MORE THAN THIRTY HEAVILY-ARMED INDONESIAN PARATROOPERS SOME DAYS AGO. A FIVE-MAN MALAYSIAN DELEGATION HAS LEFT KUALA LUMPUR FOR THE UNITED NATIONS TO PRESENT ITS CASE TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL.

IF THERE IS NO SATISFACTORY RESPONSE FROM THE SECURITY COUNCIL, THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT AND HER ALLIES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO PREVENT FURTHER INDONESIAN INCURSIONS INTO MALAYSIAN TERRITORY.

MEANWHILE, OVER IN BORNEO, BRITISH FIGHTER AIRCRAFT PATROLS IN SARAWAK HAVE BEEN INTENSIFIED AND DEFENCE MEASURES ALONG THE BORDER ??? INDONESIAN BORNEO HAVE ALSO BEEN STRENGTHENED. POLICE MEASURES AGAINST THE COMMUNISTS IN THE STATE ARE BEING STEPPED UP, TOO.
