  • Description

TROOPS AND POLICE PRESERVED AND UNEASY PEACE -- INTERRUPTED BY A FEW MINOR DISTURBANCES -- AS DEMONSTRATORS IN SEVERAL NORTHERN IRELAND TOWNS TODAY (SATURDAY) CHALLENGED THE NEW PUBLIC ORDER ACT, WHICH CURBS PROTEST MEETINGS.

IN BELFAST, ABOUT 1,000 DEMONSTRATORS STAGED A PROTEST MARCH AND SIT-DOWN IN THE ROAD. A FEW WERE INVOLVED IN A SCUFFLE WITH POLICE. TROOPS WITH TRUNCHEONS AND SHIELDS STOOD BY IN THE SMALL TOWN OF DUNGANNON TO KEEP CATHOLIC DEMONSTRATORS AND PROTESTANT HECKLERS APART.

THE OBJECT OF THE PROTESTS, THE PUBLIC ORDER ACT, CAME INTO FORCE EARLIER THIS WEEK. IT CLAMPS DOWN ON THE ORGANISATION OF ILLEGAL PROCESSIONS, AND ON DEMONSTRATORS WHO CARRY OFFENSIVE WEAPONS AND WEAR THE UNIFORMS OF QUASI-MILITARY ORGANISATIONS.

THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT ORGANISED TODAY'S RALLIES AND PROTESTS IN AN EFFORT TO PROVE THE ACT UNWORKABLE. DEMONSTRATORS WERE OUT IN A TOTAL OF NINE NORTHERN IRELAND TOWNS AND CITIES -- AND IN ONE THEY BURNT A COPY OF THE ACT ON THE LOCAL COURTHOUSE STEPS.

ALTHOUGH THE ACT - ONLY APPLIES TO NORTHERN IRELAND, ADDITIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS PROTESTS HAD BEEN PLANNED IN WALES AND ENGLAND.

DURING THE BELFAST DEMONSTRATION, POLICE TOOK THE NAMES OF ABOUT 80 PEOPLE LIABLE FOR PROSECUTION UNDER THE NEW LAW.

COLD AND WET WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE INTERPRETED AS HELPING TO COOL THE SITUATION IN ULSTER. THE FEARED REPETITION OF FRIDAY NIGHT'S VIOLENCE IN LONDONDERRY, WHEN FIVE BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE INJURED, DID NOT MATERIALISE.
