  • Description

The Bolivian President Hugo Banzer who has assumed supreme command of the Bolivian Armed forces swore in new military commanders in La Paz last week. (May 29)
Among the new appointments were those of Cesar Ruiz, Director of the National Intelligence Service, Carlos Alcoreza, head of the Army and Eladio Sanchez, the Air Force.

President Banzer's move, and the re-organisation of the armed forces chiefs, came after the resignation of General Joaquin Zenteno Anaya from the position of Supreme Commander after he had severely criticised the Government.

General Anaya criticised the coalition parties which support President Banzer for their "inefficiency".

The President is reported to have assumed the role of Supreme Commander to forestall another potential political crisis.

Last month a former Minister of the Interior, Colonel Andres Selich was beaten to death by police in an Interior Ministry Building after being arrested as one of a group alleged to have tried to stage a plot to overthrow President Banzer.

Police Chief Colonel Jose Caballero was dismissed after the incident and the Interior Minister Alfredo Arce resigned.

A Government announcement said that President Banzer, who will assume the honourary rank of Captain General, will only be an interim Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
