  • Description

Government sources in Nicosia announced on Tuesday (3 May) that Cyprus President Archbishop Makarios will attend the Commonwealth Conference in London next month, despite the heart attack he suffered a month ago.

SYNOPSIS: Since his illness the President has been gradually resuming his official duties and on Monday (2 May) he presided over a meeting of the Cyprus cabinet and National Council at his residence in Nicosia. The 63 year old Archbishop has been advised to give up smoking and keep his activities to a minimum -- and in deference to his health ministers and officials attending the meeting did not smoke during the two hours of discussions.

Among those attending the meeting were negotiators in Greco-Turkish talks on the future of Cyprus. Since the Turkish invasion of 1974 the island's economy has suffered serious setbacks and the prospect of an early settlement between the divided Greek and Turkish communities is regarded by most observers as remote.
