Background: SOUTH VIETNAM'S GOVERNMENT CLAIMS ITS FORCES KILLED 134 VIET CONG REBELS LAST TUESDAY. AN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE SAID AN AIRBORNE BATTALION ACCOUNTED FOR 54 GUERRILLAS; AIR FORCE PLANES IN SUPPORT KILLED 80. IT APPEARED TO BE THE BIGGEST BATTLE YET IN THE VIETNAMESE WAR.

THE BATTLEFIELD IN BA XUYEN PROVINCE WAS VISITED THE NEXT DAY BY GENERAL NGUYEN KHANH, ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, GENERAL TRAN TU OAI, THE COUNTRY'S PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE DIRECTOR, AND A PARTY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ADVISERS. THEY SAW THE VIET CONG DEAD, THE PRISONERS THAT WERE TAKEN AND ITEMS OF CAPTURED EQUIPMENT.

(GOVERNMENT LOSSES IN THE BATTLE WERE LISTED AS SIX PARATROOPERS KILLED AND 14 WOUNDED. IT WAS THE FIRST MAJOR CONTACT WITH THE VIET CONG SINCE THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT BEGAN A STRONG EFFORT LAST WEEK TO DESTROY REBEL STRONGHOLDS IN THE SOUTHERNMOST PROVINCES.)
