This is a big day, especially for the children, for when this benefactor of rich and poor sets foot on Dutch soil it return the beginning in Holland of the centuries old St. Nicholas celebrations.
The old man mounts his horse and his tour through the city begins, to the accompaniment of cheers from thousands of kids who have been waiting with bated breath and excitement for this glorious moment. For them there lies about fourteen days junketing, with sweets and toys in abundance.
The St. Nicholas Feast culminates in a grand feast and birthday with the Holy Man on December 5th; and on December 6th St. Nicholas sails away from Holland.
