    President Anwar Sadat of Egypt today (27 January) began a three day official visit to france seeking to buy arms and enlist further French support for Arab terms a middle East settlement.

    The President becomes the first Egyptian head of state to visit france for 53 years. His prime Mission is to purchase arms, replacing weapons lost in the 1973 Middle East War -- now that the Soviet Union has not delivered any weapons to Egypt for 14 months.

    President Valery Giscard d'Estaing greeted Mr. Sadat at Orly Airport, the scene of an Arab guerrilla grenade attack only eight days previously. the two leaders were surrounded by tight security with more than 5,000 policemen on special duty.

    A major arms deal between France and Egypt becomes possible now that France has lifted its embargo on arms sales to front-line middle bomber as well as anti-tank helicopters, tanks and missiles.

    In addition, President Sadat said that he was hoping to persuade france to play a more active role in promoting a permanent Middle east settlement. In an interview on the eve of his journey, the Egyptian leader categorically ruled out war as a means of solving the Middle East crisis.
