Background: THE SCARS LEFT ON JERUSALEM AND BETHLEHEM BY THE CONFLICT BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HER ARAB NEIGHBOURS IN JUNE HAVE BEEN PUT IN THE BACKGROUND BY THE FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE COINCIDING WITH THE CHRISTMAS SEASON, AND WITH THE JEWISH FESTIVAL HANNUKAH AND THE MOSLEM FESTIVAL ID-EL-FITR.

WITH THE SEASON HAS COME AN INCREASE IN TOURIST TRAFFIC TO THE HOLY PLACES. DURING THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD MORE THAN 15,000 PILGRIMS ARE EXPECTED TO VISIT JERUSALEM AND BETHLEHEM. THE FIRST PARTY OF TOURISTS, FROM AUSTRALIA, ARRIVED THIS WEEK. EACH TOURIST RECEIVED A GIFT.

THE TENSION LEFT BY JUNE'S CONFLICT HAS GIVEN WAY TO GOODWILL AT THE ALLENBY BRIDGE CROSSING THE JORDAN. ISRAELI AUTHORITIES ARE ALLOWING PEOPLE TO CROSS INTO JORDAN TO VISIT RELATIVES, AND CHRISTIAN ARABS FROM JORDAN ARE BEING ALLOWED INTO BETHLEHEM TO OBSERVE CHRISTMAS RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES.

OVERSEAS TOURISTS IN JERUSALEM AT CHRISTMAS WILL RECEIVE A CHRISTMAS CARD FROM THE MAYOR. HE HAS ASKED THAT HIS CARDS BE DISTRIBUTED TO EVERY HOTEL ROOM IN THE CITY.

ONE OF THE ISRAELI CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS BEING OBSERVED AGAIN THIS YEAR IS THE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS TREES TO CHRISTIANS. THE PRESENTATION IS MADE BY THE ISRAELI MINISTRY OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
