  • Description

THE TRIAL OF EIGHT MEN, CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTING TO ASSASSINATE PRESIDENT NASSER OPENED IN THE SUPREME STATE SECURITY COURT IN CAIRO TODAY (TUESDAY). THE PROSECUTION ALLEGED THAT THE EIGHT MEN, MEMBERS OF THE BANNED MOSLEM BROTHERHOOD, HAD PLANNED TO BLOW UP A TRAIN IN WHICH PRESIDENT NASSER WAS TRAVELLING.

FOUR OF THE ACCUSED HAVE PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO CHARGES OF PLOTTING TO ASSASSINATE THE PRESIDENT AND PLANNING AN ARMED TAKE-OVER. FOUR OTHERS ARE BEING TRIED IN ABSENTIA.

THE TRIAL IS THE FIRST TO BE HELD IN CAIRO INVOLVING THE MOSLEM BROTHERHOOD, A RELIGIOUS ORGANISATION BANNED IN EGYPT IN 1954 AFTER FIVE OF ITS LEADERS HAD BEEN HANGED FOR ATTEMPTING TO ASSASSINATE PRESIDENT NASSER.

THE INDICTMENT AGAINST ALL THE ACCUSED, ISSUED LAST DECEMBER, DEMANDED LIFE SENTENCES WITH HARD LABOUR FOR ALL OF THEM. IT SAID THE GROUP PLOTTED FROM 1955 UNTIL THEIR ALLEGED PLANS WERE UNCOVERED LAST AUGUST.

    THE TRIAL RESUMES TOMORROW.
