  • Description

American civil rights leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson who's currently on a fact finding tour of the Middle East says the United States must assume a major responsibility for reconciling Israeli security and Palestinian justice. And he's criticised the U.S. policy of refusing to talk with the P.L.O. So far his tour has taken him to Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt.

SYNOPSIS: The question of U.S. - PLO relations was raised while the Reverend jackson was in Beirut. Brother of P.L.O. leader Yasser Arafat escorted the black civil rights leader on a tour of a local hospital..an indication of the continued troubles in Lebanon.

Reverend Jackson's presence in Beirut highlighted the diplomatic gains being made by the P.L.O. A controversial spokesman in the United States for the Palestinian case, he's seen by many observers as a counter balance to the powerful Jewish lobby in Washington.

Reverend Jackson is heading delegation of church leaders on the Middle East tour. It's the second visit to Lebanon by American blacks in less than a month.

The Palestinian problem was at the centre of talks between Reverand Jackson, Lebanese Prime Minister Selim Al-Hoss and yasser Arafat. Reverend Jackson said after the meeting he was close to establishing a beach head for the U.S. government to assume its responsibilities. He said he wanted Israel to release the United States from its four year commitment not to talk to the PLO. He added that he'd have further discussions with Mr. Arafat and would ask for an end to PLO violence. Reverand Jackson said he believed there'd already been a measure of progress.
