    ALGERIA TODAY (FRIDAY) CELEBRATED THE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE. THE PRIME MINISTER, M. HOURARI BOUMEDIENNE, MARKED THE OCCASION BY UNVEILING A STATUE COMMEMORATING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY INDEPENDENCE FIGHTER, EMIR ABDELKADER.

    M. BOUMEDIENNE UNVEILED THE STATUE IN AN ALGIERS SQUARE. THE EMIR FOUGHT THE FRENCH CONQUEST OF HIS COUNTRY IN 17 YEARS, AND EVENTUALLY DIED IN EXILE IN EXILE IN DAMASCUS IN 1883.

    ALGERIA FINALLY ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE IN 1962, AFTER A WAR THAT LASTED FOR SIX YEARS. COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE HIMSELF CAME TO POWER IN JUNE 1965, AFTER DEPOSING BEN BELLA, WHO'D BEEN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC FOR A FIVE YEAR TERM IN 1963.
