Background: Two Soviet destroyers entered the Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar on Friday (29 March).

The ships -- Kirbak class destroyers "Bodrij" and "Silnij" -- were two of four Soviet Ships which passed through the English Channel on Sunday (24 March).

The were accompanied by the Soviet oiler "Olekma". Other Russian ships were reported to have turned back when nearing the Straits.

The ships were shadowed by the British destroyer "HMS Norfolk" and a frigate, "HMS Landaff".

Clearing operations are due to begin next week in the Suez Canal area. Three British ships -- minesweepers "AMS Abdiel" and "HMS Maxton", and mine-hunter "HMS Bossington" -- left Gibraltar for the Canal area on Friday.
