  • Description

Soccer...and China advanced from Group 'B' to the second round of the Asian Games Tournament with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Qatar on Thursday (14 December). Despite only managing to draw 1-1 with Saudi Arabia, Iraq finished top of Group 'B' and also qualify for the second round matches. The games are being held in Bangkok in Thailand.

SYNOPSIS: Qatar kicked off in their third match after losing both previous games in the tournament. It is the first time they have played at the Asian Games, and they were soon in trouble. After twenty-five minutes full-back Amber Baker sliced a clearance and Jung Chih-hang scored with a left-foot shot.

The Chinese players gained control of the vital mid-field area and attacked, but several good saves by Qatar's goalkeeper, Mohammed Hussaine won the approval of the Qatar supporters.

In the second half the Chinese continued to press forward, looking for the goal which would ensure them a place in he next round. They lost 2-0 to Iraq in their previous match, but here they take the initiative.

The Chinese team seemed upset by the tough tackling of the Qatar side and frequently complained to the referee. They seemed unable to play as well as when they beat Saudi Arabia in their opening match, and their shooting often lacked power.

Qatar nearly equalised with this free-kick.

Two goals in a minute settled the match. Ho Chia scored the first. And in the 70th minute a shot by Li Fu-Pao was deflected by a Qatar defender, giving his keeper no chance.
