Background: Nationalist China mobilised maximum defence measures on Formosa for the June 18 visit to the capital Taipei of President Eisenhower. On Quemoy Island, 100 miles from mainland China, troops underwent strenuous training in simulated battle conditions June 10.

Alerted under renewed but sporadic shelling from the mainland, the troops and recruits - part of the 600,000 - strong Armed Forces - met the tense conditions of threatened attack and bombardment from Communist China similar to those experienced during the visit of the late John Foster Dulles to Taipei two years ago.

Despite the cancellation in the Far East tour of President Eisenhower to Tokyo, announced June 16, the scheduled visit to Taipei remained unchanged though the Seoul visit was advanced one day.

Meanwhile on the 135-mile long Quemoy battered since August 1958 by more than 5 600,000 shells, the troops of the artillery units return the mainland fire shell for shell. In leisure moments entertainers sing in stage shows to maintain cheer and comradeship. Vaudeville is popular. Entertainers, may of them recruited from army ranks put on open air shows for the troops emerging from dug-in-positions during lulls in the firing.
