Visnews filmed Jan 21 a 9-ton, 35 feet long yawl which was waiting at Cowes, Isle of Wight, to be towed to Southampton and shipped to the USA. The vessel "Spray" or "SuccessII" was ordered by retired American Army Captain, John J. Cappelen.
What's so special about this boat? It's a replica of the original "Spray" which Captain Joshua Slocum sailed round the world, single-handed, sixty years ago. Slocum's journey took three years and his book "Sailing Alone Around The World" has thrilled sea lover for many years. Captain Cappelen was more than thrilled, He was motivated. He intends following Slocum's course. His vessel is as near the same as is possible in measurements as Slocum's but has several additions that would make old Joshua's eyes pop, including a diesel engine.
"Success" has African Mahogany planking and an English oak keel. Capt. Cappelen is to fit and rig the vessel and later have the hull swathed in fibre glass to protect it in tropical seas.
