  • Description

An everyday view in the traffic in Amsterdam : bicycles, bicycles, bicycles, the useful and accustomed means of transportation to the Dutchmen who have, as you could say, been born upon a bike.

For of the eleven million Dutchmen 6 million own a bike.

Several hundred of thousands increase in Amsterdam the traffic problems, especially during the rush hours when the roads are covered with them.

With so many of them being around it is not easy to park your bike and the signs saying Forbidden to park Bikes (Verboden Fietsen te Parkeren) are being ignored and have no effect.

Thousands are left behind along the roads, against the railing along the waterside, rows and rows of them, in all ways insured against theft and many unowned and unattended.

A great part of these bikes stand there day and night in all weather. You can't give shelter to your bicycle if you live here on the second floor of this house on a canal, or here on the on the fourth floor, not to talk of the eighth floor of this apartment - building.

After a certain lapse of time these weather influences change, turn these bicycles into a shadow of what they were. A rusty carrion is the result, forgotten by its owner.

Hundreds of them standing along the canals, squares and streets.

The Amsterdam police could not tolerate this situation any longer and during an organized cruise through the city they intend to collect all unattended and rusty bicycles that can be considered to be scrap-iron.

Quite a job that gives a lot of work to a special motorized section of the Police. All bikes are put together in a depository. People that in one way or another lost possession of their bike, can here look for it and claim ownership, during special viewdays.

Some are not worth to be reclaimed and this old and once faithful bicycle of Mr Smit will certainly stay here, as Mr Smit has bought himself a new one ...
