    Australian Rod Laver won the singles final of the 50,000 dollar (22,000 sterling) World Championships Tennis Green Group tournament in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday (14 April) by defeating Spain's Juan Gisbert.

    It was a tournament of the veterans with 35-year-old Laver winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 against 31-year-old Gisbert. Laver had been seeded number three for the tournament, but the Spaniard won his way through to the final after having been left unseeded. The match was played in difficult conditions with a strong southerly wind blowing throughout. Laver won 10,000 dollars (4,800 sterling) and collected 75 World Championship tennis points for his victory. Gisbert took out 5,000 dollars (2,400 sterling) and 55 points.

    Top-seeded Arthur Ashe of the United States was eliminated in the first round of the tournament by fellow United States player Paul Gerken. Sweden's Bjorn Borg, the number two seed for the tournament won his way through to the semi-finals before being beaten in straight sets by Laver, 6-3, 7-5.
