  • Description

FLOODS IN NORTH BIHAR, INDIA, HAVE LEFT MORE THAN FOUR MILLION PEOPLE HOMELESS REDUCED TO A STATE OF MISERABLE EXISTENCE.

SWOLLEN RIVERS POURING DOWN FROM THE HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS OF NEPAL HAVE SWAMPED THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF CROPS AND HAVE SUBMERGED OR SWEPT AWAY THE VILLAGES THAT LINED THEIR BANKS.

THE FLOODS HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY HEAVY RAINS IN THE HIMALAYAS, AND NORTH BIHAR WITH ITS NETWORK OF RIVERS HAS BEEN THE WORST AFFECTED AREA.

THE FLOOD WATERS HAVE BEEN ESTIMATED TO HAVE CAUSED DAMAGE IN AN AREA OF 4,500 SQUARE MILES. THOUSANDS OF VILLAGERS WERE MAROONED AND OTHERS HAD TO STRUGGLE THROUGH DEEP WATER TO GET THEIR CATTLE AND POSSESSIONS TO SAFETY.

THE BIHAR STATE GOVERNMENT CALLED FOR 200,000 TONS OF FOOD FOR THE REFUGEES WHO SAW THEIR OWN CROPS AND SUPPLIES DESTROYED BY THE FLOODS.
