    TRANSCRIPT:

"IF WE WERE DEFEATED IT WOULD MEAN THAT A SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE, CERTAINLY A MINORITY, OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY, WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DICTATE THEIR WILL TO THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY. THAT IS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED....THAT IS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF WE WERE DEFEATED....BUT FRIENDS, WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE DEFEATED."

Background: Right and left-wing speakers on Sunday (24 October) harangued a crowd of more than 6,000 in London's Trafalgar Square at a rally organized in opposition to British entry into the European Common Market. The rally followed a march through the city by hundreds of banner-carrying demonstrators. The principal speakers included Members of Parliament from both the Conservative and Labour Parties, among them Socialist member, Mr. Michael Foot, who warned that a decision to enter the Market would be a minority one as far as the people of Britain were concerned. He insisted that the majority voice would have its way eventually.
