    Background: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

A synagogue in Johannesburg, South Africa, was severely damaged by an explosion on August 6, a few hours before the start of a ceremony which was to be attended by President Marais Viljoen. Police said the blast, which rocked the Temple Israel synagogue at about 6 a.m. local time, caused no casualties. The authorities investigating the cause of the explosion said they were trying to ascertain whether a bomb had been planted, either inside or outside the building. President Viljoen and other dignitaries, including Israeli's ambassador to South Africa and the mayor of Johannesburg, were due to arrive there at 10 a.m. to mark the 50th anniversary of Reform Judaism in South Africa. The ceremony took place at another Reform synagogue in the city.
