  • Description

ANGER HAS REACHED A PEAK IN CALCUTTA, ONE OF INDIA'S LARGEST CITIES, WHERE LOCAL AUTHORITIES ARE PLANNING TO RAISE THE FARES ON TRAMS - THE MAIN FORM OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT. THE PLANNED RISE IN FARES HAS LED TO A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS BY STUDENTS AND OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE - AND ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS THE PROTESTS HAVE ENDED IN OPEN CLASHES WITH CITY POLICE.

ON WEDNESDAY TWELVE POLICEMEN AND THREE STUDENTS WERE INJURED IN THE CLASHES. STONES AND BOTTLES WERE HURLED AT THE POLICEMEN BY ANGERED STUDENTS, WHILE THE POLICE ATTEMPTED TO DISPERSE THE CROWDS WITH TEAR GAS GRENADES.

THE POLICE COMMISSIONER IN THE CITY HAS BANNED ALL PROCESSIONS, MEETINGS AND THE CARRYING OF WEAPONS - BUT THE DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE CONTINUED REGARDLESS.

ON THURSDAY A POLICEMAN DIED OF HIS INJURIES AFTER A CLASH WITH DEMONSTRATORS. AGITATION REACHED A CLIMAX AT THE END OF THE WEEK WHEN A GENERAL STRIKE WAS CALLED. STUDENTS CONTINUED TO RAMPAGE THROUGH THE STREETS SETTING FIRE TO TRAMCARS - AND EVEN STONING TRAINS APPROACHING THE CITY.
