    SWITZERLAND'S ALL-MALE ELECTORATE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) REJECTED A PROPOSAL THAT ANY EVENTUAL DECISION TO ACQUIRE NUCLEAR WEAPONS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO POPULAR REFERENDUM.THE SWISS PARLIAMENT THUS RETAINS ITS PRESENT COMPETENCE TO SETTLE ALL ARMAMENTS QUESTIONS WITHOUT HAVING TO ASK THE ELECTORATE TO RATIFY ITS DECISION.

    FILM SHOWS PEOPLE CASTING THEIR VOTES IN LAUSANNE, IN CENTRAL SWITZERLAND.ONLY 50 PER CENT OF SWITZERLAND'S ELECTORATE VOTED - 273,377 IN FAVOUR, 450,888 AGAINST.

    THE SWISS CITIZEN ARMY CANNOT ACQUIRE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AT THE MOMENT, BUT THE GOVERNMENT WISHES TO KEEP ITS HAND FREE TO DO SO SHOULD IT BE NECESSARY.YESTERDAY'S POLL RESULTED FROM A SOCIALIST REQUEST.LAST YEAR THE ELECTORATE REJECTED BY 536,000 VOTES TO 286,000 A SOCIALIST PROPOSAL TO BAN THE ACQUISITION OF NUCLEAR ARMS ALTOGETHER.
