  • Description

President-elect of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios, and U.K. Colonial Under-Secretary Julian Amery, inspected the setting of the new boundaries of the U.K. army base of St. George, near Famagusta, June 30, eve of the historic Cyprus settlement 16 months after the London-Zurich agreement between Greece, Turkey and the U.K.

Archbishop Makarios drove in a Landrover to see the new base boundaries and inspected maps of the other base in the Episcopi area to be held by the British as "Sovereign areas".

The long deadlock over the size of the bases, their civil administration and financial aid crumbled in the past few days as Mr. Amery, Archbishop Makarios, and Dr. Kutchuk the Turkish Vice-President-elect, held meeting after meeting. The last major issue, financial aid, ended in agreement for GBP12 millions plus certain extras - a compromise between the GBP14 millions demanded by the Archbishop and the GBP10 millions offered by Britain.

Independence, twice delayed from February 19, might now be proclaimed on August 14 or 21.

The area of the two bases, under the agreement, will be about 100 square-miles.
