  • Description

The Untied Nations peace keeping forces in the Golan Heights continued their duties on Thursday (27 May) following the news that the Syrian Government had agreed to extend their mandate by another six months.

The U.N. mandate was due to expire on Sunday (30 May), but the Syrians agreed to a further extension without fuss.

Observers with the forces say life in the Golan Heights "could not be quieter".

Austrian and Iranian troops are patrolling the broad zone between the Israeli and Syrian armies and they claim that there have been no major violations of the 1974 ceasefire agreement by either side.

One of the main U.N. positions is post 22 -- a pre-fabricated building on a plateau near the Syrian town of Kuneitra.

Another main position is post 51 -- on a rocky outcrop south of Kuneitra. The observers scan the zone daily but the only activity they see is Syrian farmers moving back into the separation zone to farm the fields.

Troops report minor violation of the ceasefire, but all express a quiet optimism that things will remain peaceful for the next six months.
