  • Description

In Phnompenh on Tuesday (March 2nd) American and Cambodian officials signed a new aid agreement under which the United States will pump more than 18-million dollars (American) of urgently needed imports into Cambodia.

Initialling the agreement at the government palace were Cambodia's acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tim Gnuon, and the American Ambassador, Mr Emory Swank.

10-million dollars of the new aid will be used for commercial products. The balance will be in American agricultural produce valued at more than 8-million dollars. However, much of the non-agricultural aid must also be purchased from the United States.

Officials on both sides stressed that negotiations had been carried out in a cordial atmosphere and centred on a list of Cambodia's most urgently needed requirements.

Since the conflict stepped up in Cambodia last year, the country's international trade has suffered badly with its staple exports - rice and rubber - the chief casualties.
