Background: Gambian Vice-President David Camara made a brief stop in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on Tuesday (22 May) on his way to attend the Organisation of Africa Unity's (OAU) tenth anniversary celebrations in Addis Ababa.

Mr. Camara is representing President Dawda Jawara, who is in Britain for medical treatment after being confined to bed for several weeks.

The Gambian Vice-President was met at Accra Airport when he changed aircraft by Ghana's Acting Foreign Affairs Commissioner, Lt.Col C.D. Benni, the Director of Protocol, Maj. Evans Kwame, and other Ghanian Government officials.

Mr. Camara, who was accompanied by his wife and the Permanent secretary to the Gambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Eric Christianson, drank a round of toasts with Ghanaian officials at the airport before continuing his journey to Ethiopia.

The OAU's tenth anniversary celebrations were opened on Thursday (24 May) by Emperor Haile Selaseie. They were due to be followed by the organisation's annual summit meeting, beginning on Monday (28 May). The heads of state of some 40 African countries were expected to attend.
