A chance goal in the final seconds of the match brought victory to Accra hearts of Oak on Sunday (11 June) when they played B.F.C. Alamania Berlin at the Accra Sports Stadium. And the Ghanaian win on the field also won them the Swissair Cup.
The ninety minutes of play passed with each side trying to out-pressure the other. West Berlin goal-keeper Knoche was constantly put to the test as the Ghanaians attacked time and again. But half-time passed with no score.
The second half was similar to the first -- both teams playing the ball up and down the field, but neither side able to put that last bit of pressure to score. But throughout the match, it was the Ghanaians who did more of the attacking while the West Berliners tried to contain their opponents' assaults. The Accra side were generally able to put up a strong defensive wall when the West Berlin players got closer to the goal.
It was only in the last seconds of injury time that Ghana broke through with a chance kick by Accra left-winger Kofi Bruce. So the Accra side finally won 1-0.
The Accra team is the current champion club of Ghana and they're in the running for the Africa Cup of Champion Clubs.
The West Berlin team is an amateur side and they're currently touring a number of West African countries playing a series of friendly international matches. They're scheduled to play two more games in Ghana later in the week. They're already drawn twice in the matches in the Ivory Coast.
The Ghanaian matches are being played in aid of the Olympic Games Appeal Fund.
SYNOPSIS: Accra Hearts of Oak, playing from left to right, attacked the defensive line of their opponents in a match in the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday. The Ghanaians were playing B.F.C. Alamania of West Berlin, an amateur side making a tour of several West African countries playing a series of friendly international matches. Although they'd already drawn twice in the Ivory Coast, the West Berliners found the going against the Ghanaians a bit rougher. At stake in this match was the Swissair Cup -- and the Accra side wanted to win it. The Ghanaians are the current champion club of Ghana and they're in the running for the Africa Cup of Champion Clubs.
Again the Ghanaians attacked -- and again West Berlin goal-keeper Knoche made the save.
At half-time, the score remained nil-nil.
The Ghanaians kicked off in the second half, playing this time from right to left. Although both teams tried to put as much pressure as possible upon their opponents, it was the Accra side that made the most attacks. And they were able to put up a tough defensive line whenever the West Berliners got too near their goal. Although the West Berliners had the ball here, they weren't able to fight their way through.
Again, the Ghanaians took a corner - but it wasn't carried through.
But later in injury time a chance kick and the game's only goal was to bring the Ghanaians victory.
