  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE MARCHED THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF CALCUTTA YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) IN A PROCESSION OF MOURNING FOR THE VICTIMS OF LAST WEEK'S RIOTING IN THE CITY. THE SITUATION IN AND AROUND CALCUTTA REMAINS TENSE - BUT QUIET. IN ONE INCIDENT A RAILWAY STATION WAS GUTTED AFTER BEING SET AFIRE BY AN ANGRY CROWD AT SASHAN.

THROUGHOUT BENGAL, SUNDAY WAS RECOGNISED AS MARTYRS DAY - AND PROCESSING WERE HELD IN MEMORY OF THIRTY THREE PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIED IN THE CURRENT WAVE OF RIOTING.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHICH TURNED TO RIOTS, WERE ORGANISED BY NINE STATE LEFT-WING POLITICAL PARTIES. A 24-HOUR STRIKE WAS CALLED TO SUPPORT DEMANDS FOR A JUDICIAL ENQUIRY INTO RECENT POLICE ACTION AGAINST FOOD DEMONSTRATORS AND TO PROTEST AGAINST THE STATE GOVERNMENT'S FOOD POLICY.

DURING THE WEEKEND THE DEMONSTRATIONS, AND BURNINGS OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES, SIMMERED DOWN. BUT AN ANGRY CROWD SET FIRE TO A RAILWAY STATION AT SASHAN - AND THE BUILDING WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED.
