  • Description

THE CITY OF CAIRO HAS NOT BEEN RAIDED SINCE THIS SIX DAY WAR IN JUNE 1967, BUT ISRAELI BOMBING RAIDS HAVE BEEN DIRECTED ON TARGETS ONLY TEN MILES FROM THE CITY CENTRE IN RECENT WEEKS. THOUGH THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC IS AT WAR, CAIRO SHOWS FEW SIGNS OF THIS. THERE ARE TROOP CONCENTRATIONS ALL ROUND THE CITY, BUT IN THE STREETS VERY FEW SOLDIERS CAN BE SEEN.

THE POPULATION OF CAIRO IS ABOUT FIVE MILLION. PEOPLE SEEM REMARKABLY UNAWARE THAT THEIR COUNTRY IS AT WAR. IN THE STREETS THERE ARE FEW SOLDIERS, AND THOSE SEEN DO NOT ATTRACT ATTENTION. IN THE SHOPS THERE ARE SALES AND BUSINESS IS GOOD, THOUGH THERE ARE FEW TOURISTS WITH COVETED FOREIGN CURRENCY NOWADAYS. THE OLD CITY WITH ITS BAZAAR IS UNCHANGED BY WAR, AND ONLY THE GIANT PORTRAITS OF PRESIDENT NASSER ARE THERE TO REMIND ONE OF THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

THE AUTHORITIES ARE WELL AWARE OF THE DANGER THAT STRATEGIC TARGETS IN CAIRO MAY BE ATTACKED BY ISRAELI BOMBERS OR COMMANDOES. ALL THE BRIDGES IN THE CITY ARE GUARDED: TROOPS ARE STATIONED AT EACH END, SOLDIERS PATROL CONSTANTLY ALONG THEM AND UPSTREAM THERE ARE BOOMS TO STOP ISRAELI FROGMEN FROM BLOWING THESE VITAL COMMUNICATIONS LINKS UP. ELSEWHERE IN THE CITY SOLDIERS WITH MACHINE-GUNS PROTECT ALL MAIN BUILDINGS: BANDBAGS PROVIDE THEM WITH PROTECTION IN CASE OF ATTACK. THE MAIN TARGETS INCLUDE IN THE OPINION OF ARMY COMMANDERS THE MAIN POST OFFICE, THE RADIO BUILDING AND ALL THE GOVERNMENT OFFICES. OTHER BUILDINGS ARE INCLUDED BUT CANNOT BE APPROACHED BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

IT IS DIFFICULT TO GET AN ESTIMATE OF THE NUMBER OF SOLDIERS IN THE CITY. MOST OF THE EGYPTIAN ARMY IS HOLDING POSITIONS OUTSIDE CAIRO, THOUGH THERE MUST BE MORE THAN TWENTY THOUSAND MEN ASSIGNED TO THE PROTECTION OF THE CITY ITSELF. NO HEAVY EQUIPMENT CAN BE SEEN IN THE CITY. THERE ARE GLIMPSES OF ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS ON ROOF-TOPS, THOUGH FOREIGNERS ARE ACTIVELY DISCOURAGED FROM LOOKING AT THEM, AND ARMY CONVOYS ARE SOMETIMES SEEN GOING THROUGH THE CITY. MILITARY ACTIVITY OF ANY KIND IS AN EXCEPTION, AND CAIRO LIFE IS REMARKABLE PEACEFUL.
