    Mr. Sunthorn Hongladarom, Secretary-General of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) has been having talks in London with British Defence officials.

    He arrived on January 15th for a four-day visit.

    The talks covered questions affecting SEATO int he light of Vietnam and other developments in the Far East. They were also held against the background of the future attitude towards SEATO of the new labour governments in Australia and New Zealand.

    It was Mr. Hongladarom's first visit to London since his appointment as Secretary-General of SEATO last June. However, he had been in Britain before, as Thailand's ambassador.

    On Wednesday (17 January), Mr. Hongladarom visited the Ministry of Defence.

    He held separate discussions with Defence Secretary Lord Carrington and General Sir Michael Carver, Chief of the General Staff. Lord Carrington is due later this month to visit Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

    SYNOPSIS: The Ministry of Defence in London, which was visited on Wednesday by the Secretary-General of the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation, Mr. Sunthorn Hongladarom of Thailand. Here he is being greeted by the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Michael Carver, before getting down to talks.

    The discussions with Sir Michael and Lord Carrington, the Secretary for Defence, were to cover matters affecting the organisation - known as SEATO - in the light of Vietnam and other developments in the Far East.

    They also came against the background of the future attitude towards SEATO of the new Labour governments in Australia and New Zealand - two of the member countries.

    Mr. Hongladarom was appointed Secretary-General of SEATO last June and it was his first visit to London in this job. It is customary for SEATO Secretaries-General to visit the Treaty capitals soon after appointment. Mr. hongladarom's discussions were to help prepare for the next SEATO Ministerial meeting in Washington in April or May.
