  • Description

Kenya urged the Security Council to expel South Africa from the United Nations during the eleventh day of discussions of the question by the 15 member Council.

The Kenyan representative, Mr. Charles Maina, said the Council must act decisively to protect the Charter and values of the United Nations and its system.

Kenya is a co-sponsor-with Mauritania, Cameroon and Iraq - of the expulsion resolution which cites South Africa's policy of racial apartheid and its continued occupation of the disputed territory of Namibia (South West Africa) as the reasons.

The Council voted on the proposal on Wednesday (30 October) and for the first time in the United Nations history a triple veto was used to block it.

France, the United States and Britain vetoed the resolution which received 10 votes -- one more than the required majority. Costa Rica and Austria abstained and --apart from the proposers-- Australia, Byelorussia, The Peoples Republic of China, Indonesia, Peru and the Soviet Union voted to expel South Africa.
