    More than 3,000 mourners attended the funeral service of Richard Cardinal Cushing in Boston yesterday (Saturday).

    Present at the service for the 75-year-old former Bishop of Boston were members of the Kennedy family including Senator Edward Kennedy and Jacqueline Onassis. Cardinal Cushing had defended her after she was criticised for marrying Onassis.

    Scores of Catholic Bishops and 11 Cardinals were joined by leader of the non-Catholic faith. President Nixon sent a representative to the funeral.

    Speaking at the two-hour service at Boston's Holy Cross Cathedral, Cardinal Cushing long-time friend from the Vatican, John Cardinal Wright praised the prelate as a "valiant newsmaker...zealous priest, uncommon prelate." Cardinal Cushing was the son of the an Irish blacksmith.

    After the ceremony the coffin of cardinal Cushing was taken to a school for retarded children he had founded in a nearby town. In the school's chapel the Cardinal was buried.
