  • Description

Ten-thousand wildly cheering Communists demonstrated their support for Portugal's military leaders in Lisbon yesterday (28 May). But the demonstration looked like worsening the rift between Socialists and Communists in Portugal's government.

The demonstrators yesterday marched to the Presidential Palace, where they reserved their biggest cheer for President Francisco Costs Gomes, who addressed them as "friends and comrades".

Earlier the Socialists and centre-left Popular Democrats -- who also bold a share of power in the government -- had announced their aimed at proving that the Communists are the only allies of the military leaders.
