  • Description

Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre -- a tradionalist who has led a protracted rebellion against the Vatican's reforms -- has held talks with high ranking Vatican officials, aimed at healing the rift with the Church's leadership.

SYNOPSIS: Monsignor Lefebvre was suspended from all priestly duties by the late Pope Paul in 1976, after his open rebellion against Vatican policy. However, the conservative prelate continued to ordain priests at his seminary at Econe, Switzerland, in defiance of the ban. He has expressed bitter opposition to reforms of the Vatican Council, including the celebration of Mass in the vernacular. The Archbishop and Vatican experts met for a third round of talks on Thursday (11 January).

While newsmen waited outside, the 72-year-old Archbishop was questioned by six Vatican doctrinal experts led by Cardinal Franjo Seper for three and a half hours.

When he left the meeting, the Archbishop told newsmen he felt tired, but added that everything went well. He declined to go into details about the mornings session, but repeated again that he did not regard his talks with the Vatican experts as "a trial". The Archbishop said his discussions were not yet at an end. He expected to return for more talks on Monday (January 15) to cover further doctrinal, disciplinary and pastoral aspects of the dispute.
