  • Description

ABOUT 3,000 MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS OF A FRENCH-LANGUAGE NATIONALIST GROUP YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE PROPOSED INTRODUCTION OF A LANGUAGE RIGHTS BILL IN THE QUEBEC LEGISLATURE. MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS, SOME AS YOUNG AS 12, WHO SAID THEY HAD BEEN LET OUT OF CLASSES TO TAKE PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION. DEMONSTRATORS THREW SNOWBALLS WHICH SMASHED A FEW WINDOWS OF THE QUEBEC LEGISLATURE BUILDING.

PREMIER BERTRAND, OF QUEBEC, HAS ACCUSED SCHOOL TEACHERS OF CREATING A "CLIMATE OF ANARCHY" BY LEADING THEIR PUPILS ON A MARCH ON THE LEGISLATURE. HE SAID, AT AN INTERVIEW, THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT TOLERATE SUCH DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE FUTURE, AND THAT RIGHTS OF MINORITIES HAD TO BE PROTECTED.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANIZED BY MEMBERS OF THE MOVEMENT POUR L'INTEGRATION SCOLAIRE (MOVEMENT SCHOOL INTEGRATION). THE MOVEMENT WAS ORGANIZED EARLIER THIS YEAR TO PRESS FOR THE CONVERSION OF BILINGUAL SCHOOLS TO UNILINGUAL FRENCH-LANGUAGE SCHOOLS. THE BILL WAS TO BE INTRODUCED THIS WEEK, BUT NO NOTICE OF IT APPEARED ON THE QUEBEC ASSEMBLY'S PAPER ORDER. WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS HEARD THIS, MOST OF THEM DISPERSED.
