Background: The Pau Grand Prix - at Pau, southern France, on April 3rd - was won by Jim Clark of Britain in a Lotus. Second was Bonnier (Sweden), also in a Lotus, and third, Bandini of Italy, in a Maserati. Clark's time was 2hrs, 42min. 0.3secs., and his average, 63.5 m.p.h.

The 172-mile, "round the houses" race, - the first for the new Formula 1 class (1,500 c.c.) - does not count in the world championship. A crowd of 10,000 watched the event, in which only six of the 17 entries crossed the finishing line.

Among other well-known racers taking part were Brabham (Australia). Trintignant (France), Gendebien (Belgium), Seidel (Germany) and Wicky (Switzerland).
