Background: A new ground station for the Intelsat satellite transmission network has begun operations at Psary, near Kielce in Poland. It took almost two years to build the new complex, which complements the Intersputnik system, operating since 1974. Intelsat uses mostly American-made equipment and cost the equivalent of more than six million dollars. The ground station can originate television transmission and makes telephone calls more accessible to the United States, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America. At any one time, it can transmit and receive on almost 4,000 channels. Existing agreements allow calls to some 20 countries but in principle, any country with an Intelsat terminal could plug into the system.
