  • Description

"Ham", the chimpanzee that rocketed to a height of 155 miles aboard a 'Redstone' missile Jan 31, arrived back at Patrick Air Force Base, California, Feb 1, in a cage. The container in which he made the historic trip accompanied him.

At the base "Ham" received well-earned attention from newsmen gathered there. But officials refused to remove him from his cage and quickly transferred him for the aircraft to a waiting car, in which he was driven off for more detailed examinations by scientists of "Project Mercury" - America's 'Kan into Space' programme.

Due to an unexpected boost from the 'Redstone's rocket engines, the capsule in which "Ham" travelled 40 miles higher than scheduled, and 130 miles beyond the pre-arranged target are out in the Atlantic. Helicopters fished the capsule from the sea and deposited it aboard the cruiser USS 'Donner'.
