  • Description

A Soviet liner, the 7,300 ton Baltika, lies grounded on reefs, 10 miles off the coast of the Atlantic island of Bermuda. A giant Dutch tug, the Elde, is currently steaming towards the island to try and free the liner.

The Baltika was on its way to Leningrad from Havana with 510 crew and passengers on board. The captain was apparently intent on showing his passengers, described as "exchange technicians between Russia and Clubs", the beauties of Bermuda when the ship hit the reefs at full speed.

The liner refused offers by three Bermudan tugs to try and pull her free. An attempt was made by two russian freighters, which appeared on Saturday, but they failed to move the ship.

While waiting for the arrival of the Dutch tug, efforts were made to lighten the Baltika's load, by removing some of the fuel and fresh water.

Meanwhile, the ship itself is proving a great attraction to Bermuda's small craft sailors. While the passengers on board the 33-year-old liner swelter on deck, Bermudans in small boats circle the ship inspecting their unfamiliar visitor.
