Weightlifting...and China has claimed her first world record since the Cultural Revolution in 1966. Twenty-five-year-old Chen weiqiang competing in the fifty-six kilogram category jerked 151-point-5 kilograms to break the world record.
SYNOPSIS: Chen Weiqiang set his record on June 7th while competing in Shanghai with other weightlifters seeking the title of Master of Sports.
Chen Weiqiang of Guangdong Province trained for seven years for this moment. His jerk of 151-point-5 kilograms bettered the existing record of 151kg set by Mohamed Nassari of Iran in 1973. It was a great effort. On his first attempt he had lifted 143 kg and the record lift was an enormous increase on that weight.
What makes Chen Weiqiang's record even more noteworthy is that his previous best lift before the competition was only 142-point-5 kilograms. Chen Weiqiang is not exactly a stranger to world records. He set junior world records on eight occasions. Even better lifts are now expected from Chen weiqiang and he'll be highly rated in future international competitions.
