  • Description

BRAZIL'S EDER JOFRE RETAINED HIS WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT CROWN WHEN HE KNOCKED OUT JAPANESE CHALLENGER KATSUTOSHI AOKI IN THE THIRD OF A SCHEDULED 15-ROUND TITLE BOUT IN TOKYO ON THURSDAY. A LEFT HOOK TO THE JAW FROM JOFRE SENT AOKI CRASHING TO THE CANVAS WITH NO HOPE OF BEATING THE COUNT.

EARLIER IN THE ROUND, AOKI HAD TAKEN A MANDATORY COUNT OF EIGHT. UNTIL THE DRAMATIC ENDING, AOKI HAD SLIGHTLY THE BETTER OF EXCHANGES IN THE OPENING ROUNDS, SCORING WELL WITH LEFT JABS.

BY THE THIRD STANZA, AOKI WAS AHEAD ON THE JUDGES' SCORECARDS. THEN JOFRE WENT ALL OUT FOR THE KILL, UNLEASHING A SERIES OF FIERCE COMBINATION PUNCHES. A LOOPING LEFT HOOK FOLLOWED BY A RIGHT COUNTERPUNCH SENT AOKI SPRAWLING FOR A COMPULSORY COUNT OF EIGHT.

AOKI GOT TO HIS FEET BADLY DAZED. ANOTHER LEFT HOOK FROM JOFRE FLOORED THE CHALLENGER WHO WAS COUNTED OUT. IT WAS JOFRE'S 34TH KO WIN AND HIS SIXTH SUCCESSFUL TITLE DEFENCE SINCE HE WON THE CROWN FROM MEXICO'S EROY SANCHEZ IN 1960.
