Visnews cameraman Neil Davis joined the 15,000-man task force as it struck through Communist supply and infiltration routes in an area 5084 miles (80-135 km) north-east of Phmonpenh.

Kompong Thmar (pronounced Tmah), a strategic crossroads town, was taken on Wednesday (1 September, but only after airstrikes by Government Skyraiders, called in to dislodge Communist forces, had destroyed half the town.

SYNOPSIS: Government troops of the Khmer Republic are continuing their major drive along Highway Six towards the provincial capital of Kompong Thom, which has been cut off by Communist forces for more that a year. By night Vietcong and North Vietnamese saboteurs cut the road, by day the Khmers repair it and push further north.

At the beginning of the month, the Government task force, numbering some 15,000 men, reached the strategic cross roads town of Kompong Thmar. As they approached the town, they came under fief enemy fire, and government Skyraiders were called in to dislodge the Communist forces. The bombing had the intended effect and three trucks were later seen pulling out of the town. But the cost of the attack was high -- when Khmer troops finally entered the town they found 200 homes and stores razed to the ground. But it's the furthest north the Government troops have reached this year.

The Khmers found 38 bodies and claimed over 100 Communist dead; their own losses were put at five wounded.
