HUNDREDS OF INDIAN AND PAKISTANI CIVIL SERVANTS ARE LEAVING KENYA AND ARE BEING AIRLIFTED HOME IN A MASSIVE SCHEME.MANY OF THE MEN FROM KENYA AND UGANDA ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS TO AFRICANS, AND WILL FACE FURTHER PROBLEMS OF GETTING EMPLOYMENT IN THEIR NEW HOMES.

TO SPEED UP THE MOVE, ABOUT 6,000 CIVIL SERVANTS AND DEPENDENTS ARE TO BE MOVED IN AN OPERATION PLANNED BY THE EAST AFRICA COMMON SERVICES ORGANISATION.ALL AVAILABLE SEATS ON INDIA-BOUND AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN BOOKED, BUT THE CHARTERING OF A SHIP MAY STILL BE NECESSARY.

SINCE INDIA AND PAKISTAN HAVE SERIOUS UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEMS, MANY OF THE ASIANS HAVE OPTED TO GO TO BRITAIN.ONE SAID: "INDIA IS A PLACE NEITHER MY WIFE NOR MY CHILDREN HAVE EVER SEEN.WE AND MANY OF MY FRIENDS WILL TRY TO GET TO ENGLAND WHERE THERE IS AT LEAST A CHANCE OF SURVIVAL."
AFTER INDEPENDENCE, FURTHER "AFRICANISATION" OF THE VARIOUS GOVERNMENT SERVICES IS EXPECTED.ONE PARTICULAR SECTION OF MEN, FROM UGANDA, RESIGNED EARLIER THIS YEAR WHEN THE GOVERNMENT WITHDREW PRIVILEGES FROM ASIAN STAFF.AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO WITHDRAW THE RESIGNATION, BUT THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL, AND A CRASH PROGRAMME OF AFRICANISATION OF UGANDA'S SERVICES BEGAN.
