  • Description

The world's largest atom-smasher is situated at Serpukhov, near Moscow. It is operated by the Institute of High-Energy Physics of the USSR State Atomic Energy Committee. The accelerator has a capacity of 76 thousand million electron-volts. This is double the capacity of the next powerful atom-smasher around the world.

The "magnetic heart" of this giant installation at Serpukhov has been working for exactly three years now. During the time Soviet researchers have staged a number of interesting experiments on it using the latest equipment. The experiments covered determining the spectrum of secondary particles, the nuclear inter-action of protons and the search for quarks, supposed foundation of matter with exceptional behaviour.

Foreign scientists from socialist countries and the European Nuclear Research Centre, CERNA, took part in some experiments.

Special attention is paid in the research on the atom-smasher to a search and study of the properties of new, unknown particles.

Recently a group of Soviet physicists revealed nuclei of anti-helium, which is the first practical confirmation of the existence of anti-matter.

Experiments on the accelerator of nuclear particles goon. Scientists expect more discoveries about the mystery of matter.
